Phragmipedium section Himantopetalum (Hallier)Garay
in Orchid Digest 43(4): 140, 1979.
Basionym :
Paphiopedilum section Himantopetalum Hallier in Ann. Jard. Bot. Buitenzorg 14: 44, 1896.
Synonyms :
Phragmopedilum section Himantopetalum Pfitzer in E. Engler, Das Pflanzenreich IV.50, Heft 12: 43, 1903.
Lectotype :
Cypripedium caricinum Lindley
Type species :
Phragmipedium caricinum (Lindley & Paxton)Rolfe.
Characteristics : The plants in this section are characterized by sedge-like leaves and the undivided edge of the opening of the lip which does not have horn-like outgrowths. The flowers of the species in this section open one after another. At most two flowers are open at the same time. Except in Phrag. tetzlaffianum which, especially in older plants, can have eight to ten flowers open simultaneously. The petals of the open flowers are two to three times as long as the dorsal sepal.
Species : There are six definite species in this section. The classification of Phrag.
ecuadorense or should I say Phrag. pearcei var. ecuadorense is not certain at the moment. It's place is
still under debate. However recently more and more people tend to classify ecuadorense as a synonym of Phrag.
pearcei.
Two recent additions to this section are Phrag. tetzlaffianum (described February 2001) and Phrag.
christiansenianum (described April 2001).
The species can be distinguished by the shape of and the hairs on the staminode. Phrag. klotzscheanum is furthermore
specified by it's hairless petals and the downy hairs on the stalk of it's inflorescence and ovary.
And whereas Phrag. klotzscheanum grows somewhat isolated in Venezuela and Guyana, the other species can be found
in the highlands of the Andes.

1 - Lucile McCook says she uses this spelling because it's the accurate way to give a Latin termination to this personal
name used as an adjective. Reichenbach himself corrected his error in his own writings. It is also a correction which is allowed by the
International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.
2 - Lucile McCook mentions that the taxon richteri might be based upon natural hybrid material, and that she simply
lists it until more is learned about this taxon.
